| TEST DESCRIPTION |
SPECIMEN |
| Summary
of endocrine protocols for quick reference |
Each profile requires 1-2 ml serum, unless specified otherwise |
| THYROID FUNCTION |
Standard / monitoring profile
(T4 & cTSH):
Used to investigate suspect hypothyroidism or to monitor, therapy. For
monitoring, collect sample six hours after Soloxine administration. |
|
Premium profile (T4, fT4d,
cTSH):
As for standard profile, but includes free T4.
Measured by equilibrium dialysis for improved diagnostic accuracy. |
|
Comprehensive profile (T4,
fT4d, cTSH, TgAb)
As for premium profile but includes thyroglobulin auto
antibodies to help identify immune mediated thyroiditis,
the most common cause of hypothyroidism. |
(TgAb - Thurs test) |
| Thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TgAb):
Used to identify active immune mediated thyroiditis,
the most common cause of hypothyroidism. |
|
| Total T4: The main product of
the thyroid gland. |
|
| Total T3 |
|
| Free T4 (dialysis): The
metabolically active form of T4, measured using the ultimate in state of
the art technology for complete reliability. |
|
| Canine TSH + Free T4 (dialysis)
|
|
| Canine TSH: Usually increased
in hypothyroidism. Helps differentiate low T4 results due to hypothyroidism
from low T4 results caused by non-thyroidal illness. |
|
TSH stimulation test (cTSH
and T4 pre, T4 post):
The "gold standard" test for canine hypothyroidism.
See manual or contact laboratory for the protocol. |
|
TRH stimulation test 1 (cTSH
before and after TRH):
Used to help differentiate central from primary hypothyroidism.
See manual or contact laboratory for the protocol. |
|
TRH stimulation test 2 (T4
before and after TRH):
Used to exclude hypothyroidism.
See manual or contact laboratory for the protocol. |
|
| ADRENAL FUNCTION |
ACTH stimulation test (cortisol
before and after ACTH)
Used to confirm spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism, spontaneous hypoadrenocorticism,
iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism and is the test of choice for therapeutic
monitoring of hyperadrenocorticism.
See manual or contact laboratory for the protocol. |
|
Low/high dose Dexamethasone suppression test (cortisol before and after 31.00 DEXEX dexamethasone).
Used to confirm spontaneous hyperadrenocorticism ordifferentiate
PDH from adrenal neoplasia.
See manual or contact laboratory for the protocol. |

to stage the oestrus cycle in, females and investigate possible Sertoli
cell tumours in males. |
