 Who are Axiom ?

Axiom Veterinary Laboratories is staffed by a group of veterinary surgeons who specialise in Veterinary  Clinical Pathology. They are the equivalent of consultants and Axiom is the equivalent of  the Path Lab at  your local hospital. Axiom Veterinary Laboratories acts as a referral service for your  Veterinary Surgeon.

When you are unwell your Doctor will frequently take some specimens of blood or urine, faeces etc.  and send it to your local hospital to help him establish what is wrong with you. When your pet is  unwell your Veterinary Surgeon may wish to do the same.

Your Veterinary Surgeon will use Axiom because of its excellent reputation:

1. The Veterinary staff are all experts in pathology.

2. Axiom invests heavily in equipment and people to give your pet's Veterinary Surgeon the right answers quickly.

3. Axiom's commitment to quality. Axiom is one of the few Laboratories to posses the internationally  recognised ISO 9001 quality mark.

There are 36 staff at Axiom, including scientific staff most of whom have degrees and customer support staff. Some of the scientists are specialists in one aspect of pathology or one species of animal. We receive samples from dogs, cats, horse, ruminants, birds, reptiles, fish and small mammals.

All the staff are keen to help your pet, but please do not contact us about your pets condition. You should  always discuss your case with your own Veterinary Surgeon.

When may your Vet wish to take samples ?

Pre surgery: before any major operation your vet may take samples to check your pets internal organs  are working well. This helps prevent unforeseen complications during surgery. This is similar  to the pre-op check you would receive in hospital. Your Vet may perform these simple measurements  in his own surgery.

When your pet is unwell: an unwell pet can have many different diseases but a bewildering similarity  of  clinical signs. Your Vet may wish to take samples to help him/her establish a diagnosis and it is  likely he/she will send these samples to a referral laboratory.

During Treatment: your Vet may wish to monitor treatment or check that the drugs he/she is giving  are within the therapeutic range.

When your pet has recovered: to check that your pet has fully recovered from the illness which made it  unwell.

Well animal clinics: if you have a pet that participates in a sport your vet may wish to take samples  to confirm that it is fit to perform. This is common with horses.

Removal of lumps and bumps: your Vet will want to establish whether any lumps he/she has removed  from your pet are neoplastic.

Geriatric Clinics: as animals become older it can be helpful to check organs function. Early organ failure can be spotted quicker and appropriate treatment quickly instigated.

To monitor vaccinations: to check that your pet remains fully protected against the important infectious diseases. If you are taking your pet abroad, your Vet will need to check that Rabies vaccination has been  successful.

Inherited genetic disease: certain genetically inherited diseases can be screened by DNA analysis of  your pets tissues.

Pregnancy: in some animals pregnancy may be difficult to assess and your Vet may take samples to  help him/her confirm your pets pregnancy.

What samples might my Vet take ?
Blood, faeces, urine, saliva, hair samples, fluids and tissue biopsies are the commonest samples taken for examination. Sometimes it is necessary to take more than one sort of sample. Your Vet may need to consult with the Laboratory about unusual illness or tests.
How are the tests interpreted ?

All the reports from Axiom go back to your Veterinary Surgeon with written interpretation of significant findings. Your Vet may phone us to discuss the results in more detail, especially in complicated cases, this is part of the service we offer. He may discuss the findings with you, to help  you understand your pet's illness.

However the laboratory will not discuss the findings directly with the owner, so please refrain from contacting us directly. we are experts in pathology, your Veterinary surgeon is able to make a much better overall assessment of your pet's requirements.

Some simple tests may be performed in your Vet's own laboratory but more difficult tests and samples from complicated cases are likely to be referred to a specialist laboratory.

What tests might be  performed ?

Biochemistry: certain enzymes and waste products are released into the blood when organs are damaged, these can be measured using sophisticated instruments and may help your Vet decide which organs are damaged.

Haematology: this is the examination of the cells in the blood, white cells, red cells and platelets. Examination of these cells may help determine if an infection is involved with your pet's illness, if your pet is anaemic or has a clotting defect. Detailed examination may also discover early neoplastic  changes.

Histology and Cytology: examination of cells taken from lumps and fluids may help determine the cause of the lump and also your pet's illness.

Endocrinology: certain disease can be caused by hormone imbalances. The amount of hormones present can be evaluated from a blood sample.

Microbiology: your Vet may take pieces of tissue, swabs, urine or faeces to find out which bacteria, virus or parasites are involved with your pets illness.

Serology: your pet can make antibodies to certain agents that cause disease. some of these antibodies can be detected in a blood sample and this helps to determine which infectious agent is causing your pets illness.

Allergy Testing: allergy can be an important disease in both the dog and cat and your Vet may take  blood samples to help him identify which allergens are causing your pets illness.
