Description
Wash cinsists of large numbers of poorly preserved ciliated columnar and
cuboidal epithelial cells, macrophages and yeasts with a clear non-staining
capsule. Neutrophils are present in relatively low numbers.
One Capillaria aerophila egg can also be seen in this wash.
No bacterial organisms identified.
Conclusion
The yeast organisms are almost certainly Crytococcus neoformans.
Histoplasma capsulatum and Blastomyces dermitidis are two similar organisms
but neither of these infections is known to occur in the UK. Has this cat
lived outside the UK?
Capillaria aerophilia is a parasite that usually lives in the nasal passages,
trachea or bronchi and eggs can sometimes be seen in tracheal washes or
bronchoalveolar lavages.
is suggest that the cat be checked for FeLV/FIV status, as it is possible
the cat may be immunosuppressed. |
